Final Frontier Patagonia: 2.700km, 21 days, unsupported
"For me, the new G.62 wheelset from NEWMEN was the perfect match for my bikepacking trip in Patagonia. We had to contend with constant crosswinds, long gravel sections, and many hours in the saddle carrying gear. It was precisely under these conditions that the new wheelset performed surprisingly well.
The wider rim width gave me stability and control above all else, as I could ride my tires at lower pressure and my bike remained stable off-road even with all the bags. The extra-tall rim not only provided aerodynamic advantages on fast gravel roads or asphalt stages, but also put a big smile on my face the whole time. The entire wheel set is noticeably stiffer and thus more responsive—something you immediately notice with the added weight of bikepacking.
The issue of crosswinds remains a valid concern, of course. But the shapes of the new rims are designed to channel wind more effectively rather than transmitting sudden gusts directly to the steering. For me, this felt significantly more predictable. Even in a back-to-back comparison with my friend’s bike, which runs a classic wheelset, the difference was surprisingly small, and on straights I simply rolled away from him.
In short:
For me, wide, tall gravel rims aren’t just for racing. With the right setup, they can offer more comfort, more stability, and even greater efficiency on long bikepacking adventures—even in conditions where the wind would normally make that seem impossible."
